Piston compressors, also known as reciprocating compressors, are the cost-effective choice for intermittent air demand, such as workshops, garages, tyre bays and bodyshops, where the compressor runs in bursts rather than continuously.

When to choose a piston compressor

Piston compressors are ideal where air is used in bursts and the machine gets time to cool between jobs. They are simple, robust and affordable. For continuous, high-demand duties where the compressor would run for hours on end, a rotary screw compressor runs cooler and is usually the better long-term choice.

Single-phase vs three-phase

Single-phase machines run from a standard supply and suit smaller workshops and home use. Three-phase machines offer higher outputs and efficiency for larger workshops and industrial sites, but need a three-phase supply. Belt-driven units run cooler and quieter than direct-drive and tend to last longer.

How to choose a piston compressor

Choose on air delivery (CFM) at your required pressure (bar), tank size and electrical supply, with a little headroom so it is not working flat out. Our team can match a machine to your tools and workload, backed by UK delivery and aftersales support.
